Choosing a landscaper
Choosing a landscaper is not more difficult than shopping for any other major purchase. You should be clear about whether you are looking for an update to your existing landscape or you want to remove everything in place and start from scratch. When you break it down into manageable steps, you can be more clear about what you need and finding the right landscape professionals is a cinch.
What to know when hiring a landscape professional
- Shop around – When thinking about a landscape professional be sure to shop around and ask friends and neighbours for recommendations of companies that have done a good job. Get bids from several companies and consider both value and bottom line price. Cutting corners is not way to find a bargain so be wary of special deals.
- Find a complete service – hiring a firm that does some of your landscape installations like sod or shrubs will only get half of the job done. Try to hire a landscaper who has a complete portfolio for landscaping installations . For instance one who installs paving stones, retaining walls, underground irrigation, etc.
- Ask to see a license – if you are hiring a pest control and lawn care company they must have the required license to use the products required so make sure a company representative shows you a current license.
- Check references – Any good landscape professional will have several references, but go beyond what they are offering to do your own research. Check the company’s track record through the Better Business Bureau and talk to any customers who weren’t satisfied to find out why.
- Check insurance – If something goes wrong, it will be very important that your landscape professional is adequately insured to take on the liability of any loss.
- Check for professional associations – Professional associations keep their members updated on the latest developments in technology, safety, research and regulations and have an expectation form their members to follow specific codes of ethics.
- Don’t pay a deposit. Quite a number of landscapers in Calgary request deposits for their services before any work has been done. When choosing a landscaper, we recommend you hire companies who do not request deposits or progress payments and that way you won’t be left wondering if they will show up.
- Get a written contract – without a contract you are not protected. Do not have any work done until you are happy with what you can expect and both parties have signed their agreement to the expectations.
